Amazon.com Product Description
Amazon.com Product Description Are you tired of running wires through your house to keep your computers networked and connected to the Internet? Have you recently purchased a wireless data card only to discover that you have to open up your computer to install it? Don't worry, help has arrived. With the Linksys WUSB54GC Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter, you won't need power drills or screwdrivers to connect to the Web anymore.
The Linksys WUSB54GC Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter converts a USB port into a 54 Mbps Wi-Fi connection. |
All you'll need is an available USB slot. You simply plug the adapter into your USB port, and immediately you'll be connected to your wireless network. It can't get much simpler than this.
By incorporating USB 2.0 and Wireless-G protocols, the Linksys WUSB54GC can immediately begin delivering data rates up to 54 Mbps (five times as fast as 802.11b) without the trouble of running wires or opening up the case of your desktop computer. To install the adapter, you simply plug it into any available USB port. (It's compatible with both USB 1.1 and 2.0 ports, but 2.0 will yield the fastest speeds.) You can plug it directly into your PC, or you can use the included USB extension cord to put the adapter anywhere you'd like, up to five feet away.
Because the adapter gets its power through the USB connection, no power cord is necessary. The included setup wizard walks you through configuring the adapter to your wireless network settings, step by step. The Linksys WUSB54GC lets you put your computer almost anywhere in the building, as long as you have a wireless signal to connect to.
Once you're connected, you can keep in touch via e-mail, access the Internet, use instant messaging to chat with friends, and share files and other resources such as printers and hard disk storage space with other computers on the network. You'll also be able to connect with any of the growing number of public hotspots springing up in coffee shops, airport lounges, hotels, and convention centers.
The new push-button setup feature makes it easy to configure your wireless devices. Just push the button on the access point and on your other enabled wireless device to automatically create a safe connection, protected by the industrial-strength security of Wireless Protected Access (WPA) and 128-bit encryption. This means that your data stays secure.

Great hardware, gratuitiously bad software. Avoid if you are non-expert.
This review is from: Cisco-Linksys WUSB54GC Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter (Personal Computers)
First off, the good. The stick gets pretty good reception, IMO.
Next the neither here nor there: if you follow the advice of the sticker and run the install CD, it will replace the standard Windows wi-fi zeroconf with Linksys's own utility. Zeroconf is not really all that great, but it would be decent of them to ask you first. If you are used to doing things the Windows way, you'd probably prefer to keep doing so. The Monitor software is not bad, but it has its own faults. You might prefer it to Windows, but don't expect any help from your resident Windows expert if you have problems with it.
Next the truly bad: the softwarte mucks around with windows settings (e.g. the notorious GTGINA.dll/logon problem) without asking permission, informing you, or giving you a clue as to who is responsible.
It is utterly amazing this thing earned a Windows compatibility sticker given this. When you buy something with the sticker, you should at least be confident you aren't going to be sucker punched by the software installing unasked for and unwanted "improvements".
This is why this software is not just BAD, it is GRATUITOUSLY bad. It's one thing to make software that is dreadful at what you buy it for (which indeed the Linksys drivers are not), it's another to spread dreadfulness around to completely unrelated functions (which the Linksys drivers do). There is no reason at all for Linksys to do this.
YOU might not have a problem right now, but in the future you may end up with mysterious and uninformative error messages which will have you digging through the Windows registry to track down.
For this reason, I strongly recommend that non-experts avoid this device. I understand that the changes this driver installs are intended to make life easier for non-experts. It may even succeed at this for some. But if you run into problems (particularly later), you are going to have to handle your resident Windows support guy getting very cranky. The problems the included software create are not only completely unrelated to the functions this device performs, they persist even if you don't have the device plugged in.
It is incumbent on a vendor, when replacing standard ways of doing things with a way that is supposed to be "better", to achieve 100% success. Otherwise they leave the poor user high and dry with no viable support. Better obvious flaws that everyone knows about than mysterious, untraceable flaws.
For Linux users, the device works flawlessly, but you have to do the following:
(1) compile the RT73 driver source and install the package.
(2) obtain the RT73 firmware deb or RPM (From the same soruce as the driver) and install it.
Once you do this, when you plug the device in the system should recognize it as a wifi network adapter and give it the device name "rausb0". You then use the method normal for your Linux distro to configure it, either iwconfig on the command line, or the KWifi program for KDE users (also Ubuntu Gnome users).
If you have never compiled a kernel module before, have no fear. Just google for "wusb54gc rt73 compile" and you'll find directions. Follow them step by step and you'll have success.

Wireless networking made easier with Linksys by Cisco
This review is from: Cisco-Linksys WUSB54GC Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter (Personal Computers)
At first glance, the WUSB54GC Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter is a simple solution for connecting any computer to a wireless network with support for industrial-strength WiFi Protected Access security (this is abbreviated as WPA and includes the newest version "WPA-PSK2").
This is a value option that doesn't require you to open up the computer to install a network interface card. Therefore, it is conceivable to install the USB wireless adapter by following four simple steps:
Step 1. Open the package,
Step 2. Insert the included CD in your CD-ROM drive and install the driver,
Step 3. Plug the adapter into an empty USB port/socket on your computer (do NOT plug into a USB hub as you won't get enough power),
Step 4. Setup the adapter with available wireless network.
I've been using Linksys networking products for twelve to thirteen years, and I've been pleased most of the time with the functionality and simplicity of their offerings at a value price. Through the years I've gradually upgraded from my first Linksys product (a primitive, but also inexpensive, router...sharing a dial-up modem connection on a wired network with a tangle of cabling to match) to my current, fully functional, wireless/wired network that has seven Linksys products attached to it.
This WUSB54GC adapter is the first Linksys device I purchased (or replaced within warranty) that did not require a call to tech support for help to hook it up. USB devices are almost always very straightforward and user-friendly out of the box, but unfortunately I ran into a snag right away.
When it took more than a few minutes to "install" the new hardware and my Windows 2000 plug and pray OS didn't find the new device, I thought that my latest Linksys acquisition was DOA (dead on arrival). Having had more than my share of networking "experience" and dreading the thought of calling Linksys about as much as...[insert bad memories here], I downloaded the latest driver (there was a newer version than the one that came on the CD with the adapter) and installed it. A search of the Linksys website for "Easy Answers" revealed none, and the User Guide included on the CD provided no help. Before giving up and returning the adapter (after checking to make sure the bar code in the package was not destroyed while unpacking the unit), a closer examination of the USB port on my notebook computer revealed "the problem" -- the plug end of the adapter is a flat rectangle that's 1" across with no tapering and the USB socket on my laptop is 1/2" across and recessed about 1/4" so the USB plug wasn't fully seated and the adapter wasn't getting power. Now, you might possibly run into this issue, too, so check your USB ports for clearance BEFORE purchase unless you want to progress to the next step.
Step 5. While unpacking the bubble pack in Step 1 above, you might wonder why this wireless adapter comes with a 5 foot extension cord. I plugged in the extension cord, plugged the adapter into the cord and it worked. So...now I have a wireless adapter with a five foot dongle (oh well...my wireless adapter isn't totally "wire-less"), but my old Linksys PCMCIA network adapter that cost almost twice as much as the WUSB54GC didn't support WPA security.
WINDOWS XP USERS: You will have an issue if you use Fast User Switching (you are using FUS if you have the welcome screen where all of the user names appear); Linksys has a workaround for that problem on their website.
The Linksys WUSB54GC network adapter is small, lightweight and it works well; the connection is very reliable and fast, installation is minimally invasive and the adapter monitor that's part of the driver makes connecting to your network a breeze. It also comes with a three-year warranty.
Here's hoping your installation goes as smoothly as 1,2,3 and 4; if so, your rating will be a 5.

Beware! If your OS is Windows XP and your computer is configured for multiple users who use login screen of Windows XP, this device will disable user login. The WN111's small size makes it easy to bring wireless access with you. View larger. |
Easy to Carry, Easier to Setup
About the size of a pack of gum, the WN111 is easy to throw into your purse or pocket. This small size was made possible by the Micro Antenna technology. The adapter supports Windows Vista and is also compatible with Windows XP and 2000 SP4. The WN111 features a USB 2.0 connection for wide compatibility and high speeds, and setup is as simple as installing the included software and plugging the device into a USB port. A removable port cover keeps the connector protected and clean from knocks, dirt and other potential harm. Fast, Backwards Compatible, and Secure
The NETGEAR WN111 uses the Wireless-N protocol (based on 802.11n draft) for speeds up to 300 Mbps and a range ten times that of 802.11g adapters when paired with a NETGEAR Wireless-N Router. With this much speed and bandwidth, you can easily download large files, place Internet phone calls, download MP3s, stream video, and play online games -- all at the same time, without hiccups, and from farther away. Patented micro-antennas allows the WN111 to achieve this speed and range while maintaining its small form factor. You'll notice the difference immediately.
The WN111 is backwards compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b wireless networks so you'll be able to connect to any hotspot, and it improves network performance up to 50 percent when used with the older 802.11b/g networks.
You can feel secure about your information as the adapter supports Wi-Fi protected access (WPA2-PSK, WPA-PSK) and 64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption for IEEE 082.11b and IEEE 802.11g. The included software makes managing different WEP passwords a breeze as you can set up different profiles for each location you frequent, saving yourself the trouble of having to type in encryption keys each time you connect to a hotspot you've already used.
The NETGEAR WN111 RangeMax Next Wireless-N USB 2.0 Adapter is backed by a 1-year warranty.

Drivers do not properly support Windows 7
This review is from: NETGEAR WN111 Wireless-N 300 USB Adapter (Personal Computers)
I went through two orders of the WN111. The first was DOA hardware issue. The second had software driver issues. I downloaded driver version: 3.5.0.7 from Netgear site. I spoke with Netgear technical support who admitted they are experiencing issues with many of their drivers not having proper Windows 7 support.
If you are running Windows 7, I'd recommend waiting for revised drivers from Netgear prior to purchasing. I'll be returning this product.

A speed/range upgrade for an older computer on a wireless n network
This review is from: NETGEAR WN111 Wireless-N 300 USB Adapter (Personal Computers)
When you need a wireless connection - or a faster one for cheap!
This review is written for non-technical people about improving the speed of their wireless access or getting on a laptop that does not have the capacity built in - For very little money! It reviews the utility of these devices and specifically discusses the features of this Netgear WN111v.2 Wireless-(draft-n) Adapter.
More and more people own laptop/notebook or the newer and even smaller "netbooks." The idea is pretty straight forward. A computer that is portable and can easily be taken from place to place, unlike our traditional desktop-type computers that are secured by both the sheer mass as well as by the multitude of wired connections they usually require to one place.
The evolution of portable technology led to what we call, descriptively, "wireless" connections. There are connections to wireless system that do not require wired connections. What they DO require is a wireless adapter, often built into to newer notebook and netbook units.
There are a couple of possible complications. One is having access from a portable computer that does not have a built-in wireless card and the other is having one, but wanting greater speed than the now older versions of wireless adapters allow. An inexpensive and entirely satisfactory solution to either issue is the Netgear WN111 v.2, available for about $60. new. I bought one of theseand am please to say that it works perfectly.
There are, essentially, four generations of wireless connections. They go by the shorthand designations of a,b,g and draft-n. "a" is the first and slowest and they increase in both speed and range up to the latest draft-n adapters and routers. Of course, for any wireless card or adapter to function, it must be within range and have access to a wireless router. These are ubiquitous at internet `hot spots' and are frequently becoming the connections of choice in peoples' homes.
When I first wanted to increase the wireless download speed of my own notebook (two years old and with a built-in a/b/g wireless card, I mistakenly thought that I would only need to replace that card with one that would receive the faster, `draft-n' signal. Wrong! Turns our that these small wireless cards are often necessarily compliant with the motherboards (the computer heart and brain of your machine) and the card cannot be replaced with a `draft-n' card because it will not work with the motherboard.
I actually thought about replacing the notebook computer - though in all other respects, it performed perfectly. Then I discovered the magic of wireless adapters, including those that received the speedier `draft-n' signals and connected to the outside of a laptop by simply 1) downloading the software from the company's website if a disc did not come with I and then 1) plugging it into an available USB (v2) port. After trying several and doing a good deal of research, I settled on the Netgear NN111 v.2 wireless USB adapter. It works perfectly.
For the information of the `teachies' among readers, the specifics are as follows:

* Smart Wizard(tm) simplifies setup and Touchless Wi-Fi Security makes connecting to secure networks simple and fast
Warranty
* NETGEAR 1-year warranty
There are other reasons you might want to consider getting one.
If you have upgraded your wireless router at home from the now standard `g' or `a/b/g,' to one that spreads the coverage and increases the signal strength and downloading speed, you will find that if ANY device operating at less than the `draft-n' speed is connected to your network, the entire network will revert to the slower `g' configuration. For the `n' to work, every item connected to that network must be able to use the signal at that level or the whole shebang reverts (`downscales') to the lowest common denominator.

Great addition to home WiFi
This review is from: NETGEAR WN111 Wireless-N 300 USB Adapter (Personal Computers)
I chose Netgear because I have a Netgear router, and I thought it might be better matched than another brand. I installed the booster software while using an ethernet connection. I let the installer check for online updates, and all went well.
My laptop no long gets dropped signals from my Netgear router, and connection speed has increased from 54 Mbps to 130 or more Mbps. I can also see several more WiFi networks than before.
The chubby booster blocks the neighboring USB ports, so I put the booster on an extension cable. That has the added benefit of letting me move the booster to obtain the maximum signal.
Note: My modem and router are next to the TV and stereo receiver, and the router is hardwired to the iPod dock and Roku video box. When the TV and sound system were turned on and my husband used the remotes, my wireless computer would get dropped Internet signals. By attaching a long extension cable to the booster, I was able to put the booster up on a bookshelf, where it no longer gets interference from the stereo, CATV and TV remotes.

This USB WiFi adapter is great! It's a very cost efficient way of giving WiFi capabilities to desktop Macs. I'm also very impressed with the seller, Panther Networks. Within minutes of ordering I had received an email from them thanking me for the order and outlining my support options. The unit was shipped last Saturday and arrived on Monday! Wow! It didn't work out of the box because of incompatibilities with the included software. However, Panther Networks were extremely supportive and sent me different driver software to try. Everything works great now. I can connect to my home router and also to ad hoc networks. Highly recommended.

I'm using this OS X Snow Leopard. I am unable to get this product to connect to my 802.11n Airport base station any faster than 54mbps. Also, the include software is horrible. It crashes quite a bit and is very unintuitive. The biggest problem though, is that it does not maintain a connection unless you are logged in, so you won't be able to use any of your computer's remote services until a user account is logged in.

Excellent Value - Why Would You Want a New One?
This review is from: E2000 Advanced Dual-Band Wireless-N Router *Refurbished* (Electronics)
With a refurbished product, you know that it has been evaluated and functions to the manufacturer's specifications. With a new version, the likelihood that there are minor flaws to the product's aesthetics is higher, however you may end up with a defective/DOA unit.
The E2000's throughput and performance outpace that of the E3000 (more expensive) and provide most of the same features. Even though this model isn't capable of multicasting 2.4GHz and 5GHz at the same time, isolating the unit to 802.11N clients only and connecting to a Gigabit desktop for network storage is blazingly fast. I have our cable modem plugged into the E2000, several newer "N" devices connected at 2.4GHz wirelessly, one desktop computer via Gigabit Ethernet and an Airport Extreme (b/g capable - looks like a UFO with a port from the E2000 plugged into its WAN port) in G-only mode for the older wireless clients in the house. I wanted to keep our WDS network alive with AirTunes on an Airport Express (b/g version) in our home theater, so I chose another wireless network name for the Airport devices.
Once I figured out that confusing setup, the execution was a breeze. People complain about the functions of this router being split between the Cisco setup CD/program and the root IP's web-based interface, but after the initial selections (router name and a few other items that won't ever need to be changed) with the CD there is really no need to re-run it. The main items unavailable on the web interface are Parental Controls (not an issue in my situation, at least) and Guest Access (in my opinion, not a great idea for home networking).
Bottom line: this product is fast and does what it is supposed to. I don't need a "full-featured" router that does a poor job as a Network Attached Storage device, or access to a USB printer when my multi-function device would be crippled to printing only in that configuration. I wanted a good quality 802.11n-capable router with gigabit ethernet and got exactly what I was looking for...
in a factory-tested device at an unbeatable price!

Firstly , As and other reviewer already pointed out, buying a refurbished makes a lot of sense, specially if they come with some warranty. In most cases, in my limited experience, you have to be really unlucky to get a refurbished product that is bad - specially when it comes to electronics.
Some useful buying advice :
1) The router supports 2.4 GHz as well as 5 GHz frequency settings, and both work fine.
2) The router works well with VPN. I use it regularly without any hangs or lagging issue.
3) I live in a 1000 sq feet apartment, and always see Signals Strength as "Excellent"
4) No overheating whatsoever, with heavy usage, and 5 devices connected.
5) Very stable, with no need for frequent resets.
5) Refurbished router come with a 90-days Cisco warranty. That combined with the excellent amazon return policy makes this a great deal.
6) Cisco Connect software that comes bundled with the router is very user friendly, and setup was a breeze.
7) If your cordless phone has interference issues with the router, solving the channel using advance settings solves the issue.
8) Work great with Netflix, Hulu and other streaming services. I stream using a roku box.
A great performer for sure.

Faulty Device Replaced by Amazon
This review is from: Cisco-Linksys AE1000 High-Performance Wireless-N Adapter (Personal Computers)
I've been working to get the AE1000 (Windows 7-64) consistently connected to my E3000 router on N on 40Hz for over two weeks now. This is what I have learned:
1) If you are running Zone Alarm firewall software you need to uninstall it, not disable it, prior to running the AE1000 setup. If you do not the setup will indicate you are running wireless management software that is not compatible. You can reinstall Zone Alarm software after the AE1000 is setup.
2) All important wireless features work, including WAP2, MAC address control, and QOS.
3) I was able to get 250+ Mbs from one end of my house to the other with signal strength in the 50% to 70% range even through two walls and 50 feet away.
4) All the above dies after anywhere between 8 and 30 minutes, especially if there is significant throughput, like streaming music or video. The blue light on the AE1000 glows a steady blue and there is no connection to the router.
5) A reboot and reconnect works for a few minutes and then the connection to the AE1000 is dropped again.
6) Updating to the latest firmware for the AE1000 did not change things.
Other wireless N devices I have connect to the E3000 on N on 40Hz with no problems and maintain stable connections for days with not problem. I'm going to try the AE1000 on an XP Pro laptop to see if it is only a Windows 7 64 problem and will update this review at a later date.
I received a new AE1000 in one day from Amazon. This is the first time I've had to return a product I purchased from Amazon. I was very easy to get a replacement. This is my experience with the new AE1000:
1) The drivers were already installed and updated from the prior installation and Zone Alarm already "knew" about the device. I plugged it in to a 3 foot USB extension cable and it was immediately recognized.
2) I had MAC address control turned off and SSID Broadcast turned on. I made a wireless connection to my 5 Ghz network with WPA2 without a problem. Speed was 271 Mbps.
3) I turned on MAC address control after adding the MAC address for the AE1000 and the connection remained solid.
4) I have been showing 50% to 70% signal strength over a distance of about 125 feet and through two walls and one floor with a consistent 271 Mbps connection speed.
5) It's been up and running without a problem for 24 hours now.
Remaining things to check:
1) Does the connection survive a reboot without having to specifically reconnect to the network.
2) Can the connection be maintained with SSID turned off.
At this point I am changing by rating to 3 stars and will rate it higher if it continues to function well.
Update:
I have been able to establish a stable connection at 271 Mbps for 48 hours using WPA2, MAC Address Control and SSID broadcast off. It appears that the device I was initially using was defective. Amazon sent me a replacement device that appears to work with no problems.

Verdict is still out on this...
This review is from: Cisco-Linksys AE1000 High-Performance Wireless-N Adapter (Personal Computers)
The verdict is still out on this puppy. I haven't been able to get it installed and running. My problems are similar to those described in other reviews: Conflicts with other software controlling network and incompatability with my anti-virus program. I can't believe that Cisco hasn't thought about these very, very common situations and developed a fix. Like others, I have been told to uninstall my anti-virus program. I may do that, but am in no hurry. Customer support also seemed to struggle with installing the device under Windows 7. HELLO CISCO!!!!: Windows 7 ships on just about everything these days. Perhaps I will come back in a few weeks and sing the praises of this device, and the Cisco Router I purchased at the same time, but we will have to see. Beware.

So Far So Good
This review is from: Cisco-Linksys AE1000 High-Performance Wireless-N Adapter (Personal Computers)
I have been using this adapter for a couple of weeks now and it is doing a pretty good job considering the distance I am from the router. Living in the boonies, I have a rinky dink WiFi ISP with only a 1.5Mbs system. My computer is set up in another building about 100 feet from the house. The antenna adapter is outside the building and is connected via a 10 foot extension running through the wall to the computer inside. As you can see, this is not the most desirable setup. So I am asking a lot out of this adapter. My router, in the house, is a Linksys E3000 and is running two computers in there. I usually run the computer in the outbuilding on the 5GHz side and those in the house on the 2.4GHz. Actually, it's just the opposite of the way it should be run. But it works for me. Today I watched a 3 hour Internet movie on the computer in the out building with no drop-outs.
The one problem I have had with this I've also had with my other Linksys adapters, constant drop-outs. Aggravating drop-outs that produce that little white circle going round and round and round. After doing a whole lot of research on the net I did not find anything except a bunch of people putting down the Linksys products. Then I saw one article where a guy said that Linksys (Cisco) has been around for a long time and if they made inferior products they would not still be in business. That made a lot of sense. So, if the router is good and the adapter is good why the problems?
I started searching for the problem. I went to the Device Manager to see what I could find. First place I look is Network Adapters. It lists the AE1000 but also a Microsoft Wireless Router Module. Without getting any good answers searching the net I decided to Disable this. Kazaam! No more drop-outs. So I Enabled it again and the drop-outs were back. I Disabled it again and left it that way. I told a friend about it and he tried it but said it had no affect on his system. But his system is 10 times the Bandwidth I have and he's not had drop-outs to begin with. So I have been running now for over a week with a pretty good signal.
Today I am ordering two more AE1000s for those computers in the house. Oh, and one more thing. If you have an N type router and a G type Laptop put one of these on the Laptop and convert it to an N. You'll be amazed at the difference in speed.

Easy. Fast. Simple. Deligtful.
This review is from: Cisco Valet M10 Wireless BroadBand Router 54Mbps 802.11N M10-RM *Refurbished* (Electronics)
This is a great router. I paid much more for it than what is offered for today (only $21 for a refurb!), 5 times to be exact, but I would pay full price again if I had to for this excellent router. It is nearly as plug-and-play as you can get with a router that sets up security and has easy access for you and any guests you want to add. I had heard from others how wonderful it was and am not to be disappointed. Recently I bought a new computer and had some setting it up as I had some issues with my Internet provider, but Cisco's customer service was fast and fixed the minor issue within just a few minutes. Once you set the router up to on your computer you will use a USB "key" that programs any satellite devices to work with the router. Voila! You are connected. You can tell the router how many devices you want it to connect to to reduce the risk of unwanted intrusion. It sets up a unique password for your router system, gives it a name (which you can alter if you want), secure passwords, and secure lines.

Ok for the price
This review is from: Cisco Valet M10 Wireless BroadBand Router 54Mbps 802.11N M10-RM *Refurbished* (Electronics)
I got this router to use more as an extender and access point. It functions very easily and took literally 2 minutes to set up. Opened the box, and I thought it was brand new. Had a plastic wrap on top of the unit and everything.
Now here is my problem with the router:
1) The signal will literally disappear if I move about 15 feet away. I checked other reviews for the non refurbished one and it seems like this is a common issue
2)The unit gets super hot after staying on for only about 15 minutes.
I definitely recommend shopping around some more if you need a router that provides a signal more than 15 feet. Possibly, my unit is refurbished and therefore does not work as well, but due to other reviewers comments, I think it is just due to the fact that this router kind of sucks.

Wrong software, but great technical support
This review is from: Cisco Valet M10 Wireless BroadBand Router 54Mbps 802.11N M10-RM *Refurbished* (Electronics)
This reconditioned Valet arrived with zero instructions. My search led me to several YouTube videos that show how easy it is to set the Valet up. Unfortunately, my first attempt to set up the Valet router failed because the software provided on the USB key was for a different product (the Cisco "Connector"). I then searched for Cisco Valet, and easily found a support download page, but I couldn't select the needed software because I first had to specify whether I had Version 1 or Version 2. Also on that page was a link to a support chat session, so I tried that. The person on that chat line was knowledgeable and helpful. She told me that the M-10 Valet is Version 1 unless it says Version 2 on the back. She pointed me to the correct software and told me to save it to the computer because the computer would save it to the USB stick with the proper settings after I completed setup. With the correct software, the setup proceeded flawlessly, and it gave a great wireless connection at close range. I will try testing the range limits later, but for now I am happy that it worked OK at the close range of a few feet. There is also a firmware upgrade available on the Cisco Valet support page, but I will pass on that unless I run into problems later. The Valet manual (also downloaded from the Cisco support page) says I can disable the SSID Broadcast (for better security), but I have not yet found the way to do that.
Overall, this router lives up to its promise of easy setup (once you get the correct software), and I am happy with it.
