I had a PCI wireless card for my desktop that was several years old and no longer supported by the manufacturer. I needed to upgrade, but I wanted a USB wireless adapter this time around. I wanted to get it out from the bottom of my desk so I could a better signal. I had certain requirements for my new purchase. It couldn't cost any more than $45. It had to be USB. And it had to have some sort of USB extention cable or cradle. It had to be reviewed by Windows Vista users. It also had to have excellent reception. I don't have a big house, but there were a lot of walls and electronics near and in between the Access Point and my computer. After searching I found the DLink Wireless G adapater fit the bill. I picked it up for $30 (at least $10 less than local stores). All of the reviews talked about great reception, even indepent review sites. And it had the USB craddle I was looking for. I bought it and got free shipping along with it! What a Deal! I've had this little gem installed for about one month now, I coudn't be happier. It gets great reception. This adapter runs absolutely great with Vista. I am also using the included connection software and it plays very well with Vista. The only downside is the optional craddle. It requires either a direct computer USB port, or a powered USB hub with an external power supply. It draws more mA than a non-powered hub can handle (at least it did on mine). I had to use the power supply on my USB hub to get the craddle to work. This is the only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5. I highly recommend this product. You will not be disappointed. 11 of 11 people found the following review helpful: Worked with Unbuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron) Out of the Box This review is from: D-Link Wireless G USB 2.0 Adapter 802.11g, 54Mbps (Personal Computers) This is the second D-Link WUA-1340 g USB adapter I have purchased. I was looking for a cheap, USB network adapter that I could use for Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and 8.10, and also for use with my Windows XP/Ubuntu dual-boot desktop computers. I am using WEP with my Qwest DSL with a 2-Wire (2700-HG-D) gateway/router/wireless access point. The only thing easier than the Windows installation was the Unbuntu one. It worked, out of the box, without any special configuration. I am not sure if this USB NIC uses different chipsets among model numbers and revisions, but the two devices I have work without a hitch. The range so far seems good to excellent, and I have not experienced any wireless dropouts while doing several large downloads simultaneously (uTorrent, KTorrent and other regular downloads). The exention cable definately make the reception range better, and the stand that the NIC plugs into seems very sturdy. Like many NICs, it does get warm to the touch, which is why it is vented. I am using it with my Dell, Optixplex GX280 and with two generic Ubuntu media servers I built from scratch with P4 Intel motherboards. Hope this helps readers, especially those people who are looking for Linux-friendly, USB network cards. This review is from: D-Link Wireless G USB 2.0 Adapter 802.11g, 54Mbps (Personal Computers) I've been using this adapter for over a year without issues. The best thing about it is that is comes with a USB 2.0 cradle that allows you to put the adapter anywhere the cable will reach so you can position it for the best signal. The included software works fine but is redundant if you are running Vista which has generic drivers that will run the adapter perfectly fine without having to install additional software. In answer to some common questions about this router that I read in other reviews or comments on reviews: 1. You don't need to match brands between wireless routers and adapters. Any G-band wireless router can send a signal to any G-band receiver or adapter. You can mix-n-match Linksys, D-link, Buffalo, Netgear, etc. products as much as you like. 2. The adapter works perfectly with Windows Vista, including Vista 64-bit as long as you have SP1 installed (Service Pack 1). 4. The range of this adapter will vary greatly depending on where your wireless router is located and how many walls it needs to send its signal through to reach the location of your computer. Your mileage will certainly vary, but this adapter is better than most I've used and gets a nice strong signal from one side of my house to the other. Overall this D-Link adapter is a great option if you want a USB option instead of a PCI card. It's worked well for over a year and I'm satisfied with it.
