My Windows XP based Dell PC recognized the adapter quickly and started working immediately. The PC with the adapter is in a room that is about 50 feet from our router (with 2 walls between)and it has had no problems receiving a very strong signal. One note for new users. The adapter has software for wireless networks that must be used to find and control links to wireless networks. The Windows XP wireless network utility can not be used with this adapter (or at least I have not found a way to use the Windows XP utility). However, the utility supplied with the adapter works fine. 9 of 9 people found the following review helpful: Linux compatible and an exceptional value This review is from: IOGEAR Wireless-G High Speed USB 2.0 Adapter GWU523 (Personal Computers) I bought this adapter because I am using Linux [...] on my computer, and this Iogear adapter is Linux-compatible. The performance is excellent, and it is a very good value. Highly recommended! This review is from: IOGEAR Wireless-G High Speed USB 2.0 Adapter GWU523 (Personal Computers) Product 5 star - bad tech support drops the rating to a 3 star. Maybe a two star drop is rough since I'm now running but... First the product - I found software install very easy with strong signal strength picked up from my Linksys router downstairs. My problem - WEP key encryption. I didn't know where to enter my WEP key code on the wireless LAN config tool. Hence I couldn't p/u the web even though I had a strong signal. I couldn't find anything in the install directions. I sent email to Iogear CS with no reply. Phone CS is only Mon-Fri normal business hours. Plus, when I finally was able to call during the week from home, I was on hold for quite some time. But the CS rep who answered was helpful and I was up and running after about 1 minute of tech support. So, here is where you enter your WEP key as I cannot believe I'm the only one with this problem. 1) Open the LAN config tool window. 2) Click more settings. 3) Click change and set encryption to WEP. 4) Then click WEP encryption key setting. 5) Click change set default key to #1, 6) Enter your WEP key value in #1 field. I was logged on immediately. I hope this helps!! Works plug and play with Linux Great product. Works out-of-the-box without any configuration in Ubuntu 10.10, 11.04 and Mint 10 Julia. Just plug it in, boot up and BOOM! you're online. by Alex Meub No 64-bit Windows support! Don't waste your money on it if you get a 64-bit system! It seems they ( iogear's website ) will never intend to give a 64-bit driver for this stuff!!! by zh7i new tech in an old computer I bought the IO Gear wireless GWU523 so I could move an older computer to a new location without re-stringing the hard wire. by WVsoccerCoach IOGear I have Vista. This adapter worked great immediatedly. (Remember to turn off the power to your computer before you unplug/plug in!) by thirdgeneration Awesome little thing I chose to buy this little thing because I read that it had good linux drivers that should be installed by default in most linux distros. by JasonWoof Works wonderfully in linux! If you are looking for a wireless usb adapter that works on linux ( ubuntu ) then look no farther. This was so easy to setup it was as easy as plug it in and your done! by Steven Klimasewski Worked great but now glitchy I got this and it has worked well, started running really really hot no matter what I was doing. Loses connection at times, especially if I power off the computer at night and... by Living Simply Low signal level The SW installation went find. Need to reboot after driver installed and then device is recognized. by K. Koellner No Problems, Installed quickly. This was installed into an old desktop that came from a corporate sell off. Windows XP was still on the machine. by Richard M. Jefferson Horrible, locked up my PC -- returning When I initially installed this, I was pleased ... for all of about 10 minutes.
